AI Risks and Self-Driving Cars: An Expert Reflects on Recent History and Experience (corrected)

Not sure why, but this post didn’t appear properly (with the intended link and a photo of Missy Cummings). This is an attempt to correct.

Today’s post concerns some very recent history and some lessons that can be drawn from it for a technical setting that is still quite early in its development.

Missy Cummings is Director of the Humans and Autonomy Laboratory at Duke University. A graduate of the Naval Academy, she was the first female fighter pilot in the U.S. Navy. After having been critical of automation efforts by auto manufacturers, in 2021 she joined NHTSA as a senior safety advisor. This appointment was quite controversial in some sectors of the industry.
