Classic video of the month: Let’s go to town (GM Bus)

City Lab recently published an article on the 1950’s video Let’s go to town.  This PR video was produced for General Motors in order to promote its buses.

GM was in an interesting position for many decades as being not only a dominant manufacturer of automobiles but also city buses. While GM sold off its bus manufacturing business (now NovaBus), it actually once was the most important manufacturer in North America.

This video is a great time capsule presenting the Business Case for Buses.

Also of note, it is a rare color video of the GM bus.  This bus model started production in 1940 and was the darling of the bus world until the arrival of the GM New Look bus in 1959.

The GM Bus is often credited as being a major factor in the rapid demise of streetcar networks in the Unites States and Canada.
