The Golden Gate Bridge under construction

Residents of San Francisco quietly noted the 78th anniversary of the opening of the beautiful Golden Gate Bridge. Opened originally to pedestrians on May 27, 1938 and then to traffic on May 28th the bridge has come to be a symbol of the San Francisco bay area.

The San Francisco Chronicle provides a series of historic photos of the bridge starting during its construction and video of the opening festivities as pedestrians from the city claimed their bridge in May of 1938.
