Help a colleague – Deaths building the transcontinental railroad

We have a new feature for you at Moving History.  Jonathan Giford, a Committee Member’s colleague is seeking information about the number of casualties arising from the construction of the transcontinental railroad. Her more detailed request is below.
Do you know how many people died in the building of the transcontinental railroad?  Estimates are all over the place.  Is there a reliable, rigorous scholarly source on this?  Or for any of the key numbers–size of labor force, raw materials, amount and types of explosives used, etc.?

If you have more info, please send us a please send us a reply on the blog, or send us a private message via facebook.
