Melville signs on to the whaling ship Acushnet

The publication Slate shared a crew list for the whaling ship Acushnet which sailed from Boston in December 1840.  The roster for the crew contains the name of a crewman, Herman Melville who would be truly moved and shaped by the journey and would go on to incorporate his experiences into a series of sea faring novels one of which Moby Dick has become a classic in Western literature.  To see the crew list and to read more about the sea faring experiences that shaped the literary output of Herman Melville see the story at the Slate web page
