President Johnson Signs Highway Beautification Act October 22, 1965

Nearly 50 years ago, President Johnson signed into law the Highway Beautification Act (October 22, 1965).

The bill limited the placement of billboards, roadside advertising, junkyards and other unsightly features along the interstate highway system.  This bill was important because of its declaration that nature was important even within the narrow strips along the highways, this is an idea that continues to hold great power even today.
